Breaking news : Maple Leafs Shed Light on Auston Matthews’ Injury Status vs. Panthers

The Toronto Maple Leafs will have a huge test in front of them when they visit the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night. The Panthers currently trail the Maple Leafs by three points for the Atlantic Division lead, making it evident just how important a win is for Craig Berube’s club tonight. Defeating the defending Stanley Cup Champions won’t be easy, which is why Maple Leafs fans are hoping that Matthews will be healthy enough to face the Panthers. The Toronto captain has been sidelined with an upper-body injury since Nov. 3, however, Tuesday’s return to practice sparked optimism regarding his outlook. While Matthews’ return could potentially be just over the horizon, it looks like the superstar sniper might have to miss at least one more game.

It doesn’t sound like Auston Matthews is quite ready to return to the Maple Leafs lineup tonight,” NHL insider Chris Johnston reported on Wednesday morning. “Still needs a few more skates to get back up to speed. Saturday’s game in Tampa remains a possibility

On one hand, the latest update is disappointing for fans who hoped that Matthews would face the Panthers tonight. The former 2016 first-overall pick tends to step up his performance against the Atlantic Division rival, having tallied 15 goals and 25 points in 26 all-time meetings with Florida.

On the other hand, Matthews missing at least one more game isn’t that surprising. Following Tuesday’s practice, the two-time NHL All-Star told TSN’s Mark Masters that he’ll likely need multiple practices under his belt before he feels like his usual self. “I felt really good, but might need maybe one or two (practices) to really get my legs and lungs back under me,” Matthews said.
