Confirmed deal : Maple Leafs’ Max Domi Approves Signing of Controversial Player

Tony DeAngelo’s return to the NHL with the New York Islanders sparked a wave of reactions, including a public show of support from former teammate and current Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi. After DeAngelo signed a prorated league-minimum deal for the remainder of the 2024–25 season with the Islanders on Friday, Domi shared an Instagram story quoting a post from the Spittin’ Chiclets account, celebrating the defenseman’s comeback. “LFG. Congrats my brother ,” Domi wrote, tagging DeAngelo. The two were teammates during their time with the Arizona Coyotes, and Domi already posted a controversial farewell message when DeAngelo signed with Russia’s SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL after failing to secure an NHL contract in September.

DeAngelo, 29, terminated his deal with the Russian club on Jan. 14, citing family reasons, after leading the team’s defensemen with 32 points in 34 games. In his eight-year NHL career, DeAngelo has faced numerous suspensions and he’s been released from teams due to this dubious behavior. Most recently, the New York Rangers parted ways with the blueliner following an altercation with Alexandar Georgiev.

Meanwhile, Domi is playing in Toronto under a four-year, $15 million contract he signed with the Maple Leafs at the start of the offseason.

Toronto won’t face the New York Islanders anymore this season after losing their first meeting earlier this season and beating the Isles on back-to-back games at the end of the 2024 calendar year and the start of 2025.
