Confirmed deal : Toronto Maple Leafs 2025 Trade Deadline Trade Chips

 

The Toronto Maple Leafs are a few points ahead of most teams in the standings, currently sitting second in their division and ninth overall. The Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators would need to make up some room to catch them but with only a six point spread and over 25 games left on the schedule, things can change.

As such, it would be smart of the Maple Leafs to try and supplement their team and attempt to fix some holes throughout their lineup. Especially with both John Tavares and Mitch Marner as pending unrestricted free agents this summer, now would be a good time to try and go “all in”.

 

According to puckpedia.com, the Maple Leafs have just shy of $3 million in available cap space with both Calle Jarnkrok and Jani Hakanpaa on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR). This of course is dependent on their respective timelines for return. Jarnkrok was listed as month-to-month after undergoing surgery in November. He has since begun skating last month but with Head Coach Craig Berube stating he is “a ways away” from returning.

Hakanpaa is not likely to play again this year, but the Leafs may be forced to find room to fit Jarnkrok in under the cap in addition to needing to add to their team.

Either way, the team has $2.976 million in cap space right now, but probably can’t opporate as if they have that much, unless they know for sure Jarnkrok isn’t coming back. With retentions and double retentions, it is feasible to add some significant pieces to fit under that, but the Leafs will have to move out some of their worst contracts in order to improve.

 

There are many scenarios where the Leafs can make the money work and despite what some have said, the team does have the assets to make trades. I will be going over a few different scenarios and looking at players who could be on the block or included in various deals.
